Personal CRM apps in 2026: Mesh, Dex, Monica, Covve, Contacts Journal and Kinfolio

A personal CRM keeps track of the people in your life: what you talked about, who their kids are, when to get back in touch. The six apps below take two very different routes to get there. This page puts them side by side — platforms, where your data lives, how people get in, what each one costs. We make Kinfolio, so read that section as the maker’s view; every fact about the others comes from their own websites and US store listings on 22 October 2026, linked at the end.

Two kinds of personal CRM

Mesh and Dex start from your digital footprint. You connect email, calendar, LinkedIn or messaging accounts, and the app assembles a contact list with timelines, job changes and reminders. It is powerful for professional networking, and it needs an account, a cloud and access to those sources.

Monica, Contacts Journal and Kinfolio start from you. You write (or, in Kinfolio, dictate) what you want to remember, and the app organizes it: notes, dates, reminders. Nothing is pulled from your inbox. The price is honesty with yourself — the notebook only knows what you put in it.

Covve sits in between: it is built around capturing people you meet at events — business cards, badges, QR codes — and enriching them with AI research.

Side by side

Prices are the vendors’ own, in the currency they publish; store prices are from the US App Store. Platforms list the minimum OS where the store states one.

Mesh (formerly Clay)

Clay joined Automattic in June 2025 and became Mesh in March 2026 — same app, new name (the App Store seller is still Clay Software, Inc.). It runs on the web, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android and as browser extensions, and it works by connecting your accounts: email, calendar, LinkedIn, X, Facebook, iMessage and more. From those it builds timelines, spots job changes and suggests who to reach out to.

Pricing: the Personal plan is free for up to 1,000 contacts (the site shows it “with credit card”); Pro is $10 a month billed yearly or $20 month to month, with a 14-day trial. Your data lives in Mesh’s cloud — encrypted in transit and at rest, SOC 2 Type II and, per its security page, possibly stored outside your country.

Pick it if you want your professional network organized for you and you are comfortable giving an app your inbox. It is not the tool for keeping notes on your aunt.

Dex

Dex (Dana HQ, founded 2019) is the networking-first personal CRM: web, iOS, Android, macOS, Windows and a Chrome extension that syncs your LinkedIn connections in the background (2,500 on Premium, 9,000 on Professional). Email, calendar, WhatsApp and iMessage can feed it too — more than 15 sources in all.

There is no free plan: Premium is $12 a month billed yearly ($20 month to month), Professional $20 ($34), after a 6-day trial. Dex says it is funded by subscriptions, never by advertising. Data lives in Dex’s cloud.

Best for people who manage a professional network and want job-change alerts. On Android it is rated 3.7 (284 reviews) against 4.4 on iOS.

Monica

Monica is the open-source option (AGPL-3.0, about 25k GitHub stars). You can self-host it for free or pay for the hosted version: $9 a month or $90 a year with a 30-day trial and unlimited contacts.

It is a web app — there are no native iOS or Android apps; it works in a phone browser. Hosted Monica runs on Fortrabbit and, as its privacy page says, the database is not encrypted (only passwords are hashed).

Pick it if you want to own the server. Skip it if you want a mobile app with reminders and a widget.

Covve

Covve is built for events: scan business cards, badges and LinkedIn QR codes, add people by voice, and let AI research them. It runs on iOS and Android, with a web portal for teams.

Pricing on covve.com is in euros: Essential €9 per month or €85 a year, Pro €17 or €160; the App Store sells Covve PRO at $12.99 a month or $119.99 a year. The app is free to download; what the free tier includes is not spelled out.

Best for sales-style lead capture. 4.5 on the App Store (626 ratings), 3.9 on Google Play (959 reviews).

Contacts Journal CRM

Contacts Journal (zaal LLC) is the Apple-only veteran: iPhone, iPad and Mac, with your data on the device and synced through your own iCloud; it works offline. It builds on your iOS contacts and lets you log calls, to-dos and files per person.

The free version caps logs, to-dos, files and custom fields at 20 each; the Unlimited Personal plan is a one-time $24.99 (iOS + Mac $69.99). Business-card scanning is on the Teams plan only. 4.7 on the App Store with about 2,500 ratings — the best-rated app here.

Pick it if you are all-Apple and prefer paying once. There is no Android version.

Kinfolio

Kinfolio is ours, so here is the maker’s view. It is a personal CRM for the people you meet in person — family, friends, the colleague whose kid’s name you keep forgetting. You describe someone in your own words, or dictate it after the meeting, and the AI turns that into a card: facts, dates, what you talked about. Birthday and keep-in-touch reminders, a briefing an hour before a calendar meeting, a home-screen widget, a relationship graph, nine languages.

Where your data lives: on your phone. There is no account and no Kinfolio server holding your people. Sync between your devices is optional and goes through your own iCloud or Google Drive, encrypted with a 12-word recovery phrase. The AI step is optional too: use your own OpenAI or Anthropic key, or the Kinfolio Pro server, which processes the text for that request and does not keep it.

Price: free for up to 5 people; Kinfolio Pro is €2.99 a month or €24.99 a year, no trial. What it does not do: it will not read your inbox, sync LinkedIn or run on the web. If you want that, Mesh or Dex are the better fit.

How to choose

  1. Should the app read your accounts? Yes: Mesh or Dex. No: Monica, Contacts Journal or Kinfolio.
  2. Where should the data live? Your own server: Monica. Your device and your own cloud: Contacts Journal (Apple) or Kinfolio (iPhone and Android).
  3. What is the budget? Pay once: Contacts Journal. A few euros a month: Kinfolio or hosted Monica. $12–34 a month: Dex, Mesh Pro or Covve.

If you’re switching

From Mesh or Clay: Mesh has an Android app since 2026 and a free tier, so the reasons to leave are the account, the inbox access and the price of Pro. Kinfolio asks for none of those — import your phone contacts or a CSV and add the details you actually remember.

From Dex: Dex has no free plan and is built around LinkedIn. If your network is mostly people you meet face to face, a notes-first app is cheaper and asks for nothing.

From Monica: if self-hosting stopped being fun, Contacts Journal (Apple) and Kinfolio (both platforms) keep the write-it-yourself idea without a server to maintain. Kinfolio imports CSV and JSON in its own column layout.

Frequently asked questions

What is a personal CRM?

A contact manager for your own relationships rather than a sales pipeline: notes on people, important dates, reminders to get back in touch, sometimes a timeline of your interactions. Business CRMs track deals; a personal CRM tracks people.

Is Clay the same as Mesh?

Yes. Clay (clay.earth) joined Automattic in June 2025 and was renamed Mesh in March 2026; clay.earth now redirects to me.sh, and the Google Play listing says “formerly known as Clay”.

Does Mesh have an Android app?

Yes, as of October 2026: “Mesh: Contacts + CRM” is on Google Play for Android 7 and up, listed by Automattic. Clay used to be iOS, Mac and web only.

Which personal CRM is free?

Mesh’s Personal plan (up to 1,000 contacts), Contacts Journal’s limited free version, Monica if you self-host, and Kinfolio for up to 5 people. Dex and Covve’s plans are paid after a trial.

Which personal CRM works without an account?

Contacts Journal and Kinfolio: both keep the data on your device and sync through your own iCloud (Kinfolio also through Google Drive). Mesh, Dex, Covve and hosted Monica need an account.

Can I move my contacts from Mesh or Dex to Kinfolio?

Kinfolio imports CSV and JSON in its own column layout, plus your phone’s contacts. Export from the other app, rearrange the columns to match Kinfolio’s export format and import from Settings. There is no one-click migration yet.
